The Bermuda Athletic Association- BAA
in association with Euro Star Goalkeeper Academy and CT Soccer School would
like to take this opportunity to thank the BAA Board of Directors, JLT Risk
Solutions, Gatorade, Elbow Beach Hotel, The Reefs Hotel, Locust Canada and the players and
coaches that supported the 1st Annual Kick 4 Cancer Soccer
Clinic.
The clinic which took place on
January 28th, 2007 at the Bermuda Athletic Association club was a
fund raising event for Ms. Lori Mello. Ms.
Mello, twenty four years old, has endured punishing chemotherapy and
radiation treatments since being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in
May 2006. There are two general types of lymphomas: "Hodgkin's
Disease" (named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first recognized it in 1832)
and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The lymphatic tissue in Hodgkin's disease
contains specific cells – Reed-Sternberg cells – that are not found in any
other cancerous lymphomas or cancers. These cells distinguish Hodgkin's
disease (HD) from non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs).
Ms. Mello told us: "I'm taking it one day at a time right now. In the
beginning we had such a great outlook and so much hope, but there have been
so many bumps in the road. It's a very stubborn cancer. My oncologist says I
am defying the odds and that they will do everything they can to save my
life."
Ms. Mello is in Bermuda right now. To look at her you wouldn't think anything was wrong
with her.
She also came across as bubbly
and very together, which she is, but deep down she worries about whether
she's going to make it.
The
1st Annual Kick 4 Cancer Soccer
Clinic was directed by international coaches;
Dan Gaspar:
University of Hartford, CT. head coach, Portugal former National GK Coach
and Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto GK Coach.
John Moreira:
USSF National Goalkeeper License, USSF National B License, Canadian
Provincial B License, NSCAA Regional Goalkeeper Certification, NSCAA State
Goalkeeper Certification, OSA Goalkeeper Certification.
Craig Forrest:
Canadian Hall of Fame Inductee, left Canada at 16 to play in England, spent
14 seasons with Ipswich before joining Chelsea briefly and then finishing
his career with five seasons at West Ham.
We had fifty players and ten
coaches register for the clinic. The event was kicked off with a visit from
Ms. Lori Mello. She spoke to everyone about here medical situation and
thanked us for our fund raising event for the Cancer Fund which has been
established.
The event raised over $4,000.
We wish Lori and her family the best and may
God continue to bless them.
Further donations could be mailed to:
