2013 BAA Victor Flood Tourney

The Victor Flood Tourney commenced with the junior event on the evening of Thursday May 30th  at the BAA gymnasium.

The event was played in round robin format. The girls U18 singles led to a final between Esaiah Lister and Susanna Armano. This was a close fought event with Esaiah eventually taking the title 21-19. In the boys U14 Joshua Thorne proved too strong for the opposition as he took the title over Luke Wilson. The boys U18 was split in two sections leading to semi-finals between Jordan DeShields and Joshua Thorne(also playing in the U18 event) and Adam Smith and Jayhair Tucker Bell. Jordan and Adam were more than a match for their opponents, setting up the final. Jordan showed great power as he cruised to victory taking the title 21-14.

Other events played were girls U18 doubles where Susanna Armano and Sophia Richmond teamed up to take a close final from Esaiah Lister and Chelsea Ray 21-19. In the boys U18 doubles Jordan DeShields and Adam Smith teamed up to cruise to victory over Dominic Hill and Shaun DeCouto in the final.

The senior event commenced on the morning of Saturday June 1st with the mens singles. Events were held at both A and B levels. In the B event Joseph Lam fought his way through to the final where he met Robert Xia. This was a hard fought final which Joseph eventually won 21-17,21-18.

The showcase Mens A singles saw the top four seeds cruise their way into the semi- finals. Mark Haugen drew top seed Rohan Pai in a grueling match that tested the fitness of both players. Pai eventually came out on top 24-22. Second seed Michael Palmer had an easier victory against veteran former champion Rick Dorush 21-11,21-13, setting up the final between Pai and Palmer.

Pai, having recovered from his semi-final, managed to overcome Palmer retaining his title 21-17,21-18.

In the women’s singles Michele Turner won the ladies B event over Olivia Oniya, while Emma Callow retained her title over visiting Austrian Nicole Birtsch.

In the doubles events Xia and Lam teamed up to win a hard fought B section final over father and son team of Adrian and John Turner 21-19, 19-21,21-19. The senior event brought together all the four top seeds. The singles finalists Pai and Palmer teamed up against Dorush and Haugan. Pai and Palmer proved to be a formidable pair taking the senior A mens title in straight sets.

The women’s doubles event teamed up Nicole Bertsch and Solreiga Cailliere(Soly) against heavily favoured Emma Callow and Dianne Blais (both former champions). Nicole and Soly upset the champions taking the title in three close fought games.

In the final event, the mixed doubles, Denzel Simons and Rowena Cespedes teamed up to take the B event title from Lee Harrison and Michele turner while veteran pair Rick Dorush and Dianne Blais showed that experience can prevail over youth as they emerged victorious in two close games 22-20,21-17  taking the Mixed Doubles A title.
